Articulation agreement between APU and Iļisaġvik College grows educational opportunities in Alaska

In a move that will expand educational opportunities in our state, Alaska Pacific University (APU) has renewed its articulation agreement with Iļisaġvik College. This collaboration will allow for students to complete coursework at either school and transfer to the other.
Building on the strategic partnership with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, APU recently reported record enrollment of Alaska Native and American Indian students for its Fall 2018 semester. Currently, Iļisaġvik College is the only federally recognized Tribal college in Alaska.
The agreement between APU and Iļisaġvik will also develop more collaboration between the academic institutions – particularly in student services, including advising, academic support and indigenous education. The partnership will mutually support students and grow educational capacity in Alaska.
“The articulation with Iļisaġvik allows students additional avenues for higher education in Alaska while remaining in and serving their home communities. Graduates of Iļisaġvik’s Behavioral Health Aide programs can seamlessly continue their studies to a bachelor’s degree at APU,” said Stephanie Morgan, Director of the Institute of Health and Wellness at APU. “Students get a boost knowing they’re already well on their way because the credits at Iļisaġvik transfer into APU’s program.”
The primary concentration is for students completing a certificate or associate degree at Iļisaġvik and giving them the ability to transfer to an APU bachelor’s degree program. The intention is to provide seamless transfer experiences for students who complete an Iļisaġvik associate degree and allow them to enter APU with junior standing with the goal to simplify the pathway towards a bachelor’s degree.
APU introduced four new educational programs this fall in the areas of nursing, community health and rural management and redesigned programs in counseling psychology. Each of these programs provide training and infrastructure to support education and workforce development for rural Alaska.
