How do I make an appointment?
My provider sent a referral to your clinic, what happens next?
Every referral we receive is logged into our tracking system for physician review. The provider reviews your information and requests tests before your evaluation. The referral then goes to the provider’s nurse case manager who makes the appointments in the time frame indicated by the provider. Delays in this process can occur if your provider fails to send the referral, does not include all of the needed documentation, or your contact information is not up to date and we are unable to contact you. Once your appointments are made, a travel and housing request is made with the Travel Management Office (TMO).
Please call the TMO at (907) 729-2400 for travel and/or housing questions.
How soon can I be seen?
If your cardiac problem is determined to be medically urgent by a cardiologist, it is possible to be seen the same day or as soon as you can travel to Anchorage. Otherwise, we will schedule you per the provider’s indication and availability of testing (usually 2-4 weeks). Most referrals to cardiology are not urgent and it is safe to wait to be seen. We are usually flexible, so if you have specific dates that you are available, please let us know and we will coordinate with other appointments or any personal travel plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to fast for blood work?
Your cholesterol level may be tested, which requires fasting. If you eat, the results may not be accurate.
Why do I have so many appointments scheduled?
Most of our patients require more than one appointment. The provider may need more information and order blood tests, an echocardiogram or additional tests.
Please check in for each appointment and arrive 15 minutes early or call (907) 729-4700 if you cannot make your scheduled appointment.
How long will my appointments take?
It depends on the appointment but generally expect:
- 20-minutes for blood draws
- 1-hour for cardiovascular or sonogram testing
- 45-minutes for a provider evaluation.
What is a stress echo?
A stress test checks the function of your heart under stress or exercise. Exercise makes your heart beat stronger and faster, which increases your heart’s demand for blood and oxygen. Your doctor will use electrical tracings and sonogram pictures to determine if there is a potential blockage in your heart’s arteries or problems with the electrical conduction system. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing and do not eat four hours before the test.

Heart Healthy Tips
Eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Bake, broil or grill. Reduce your portions and do not drink soda!
If you smoke, stop. Ask your primary care provider to refer you to your region’s tobacco cessation team or call the Alaska Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
It is important to stay active throughout your life! Staying active can help keep your weight at a healthy level, increases circulation, helps to prevent diabetes, reduces stress, improves your muscle tone and helps fight depression. Find an activity that you enjoy doing, recruit a friend and do it often. Something as simple as a brisk walk for 30 minutes daily can do wonders for your health and well-being!
