Tobacco Prevention Program recruiting participants for study: Virtual Talking Circle – Tobacco Use and PregnancyMay 10, 2021
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Tobacco Prevention Program is looking for participants to join a research study with the aim of reducing tobacco use among Alaska Native prenatal women.
Virtual Talking Circle – Tobacco Use and Pregnancy is a research project that will explore Alaska Native women’s perspectives of maternal tobacco use, education, action and treatment. Participants will receive a $100 gift card upon completion of the virtual talking circle.
- Be 18 years or older
- Identify as Alaska Native
- Used tobacco: before, after or during pregnancy
- Be willing to share experiences.
“In this study, we will be exploring a number of factors, including the perspectives of prenatal women’s current awareness of tobacco harm to themselves and their babies,” said Crystal Meade, ANTHC Tobacco Prevention Program Manager. “We hope the study will increase participant’s awareness of the cessation services available to them across the state and also learn new ways to reach more of our Alaska Native people with resources to quit and stay quit.”
Additionally, the study aims to explore the perceived barriers to tobacco treatment for those who want to quit; the protective factors and strengths utilized by those who did quit; and the perceptions prenatal patients have for our current tobacco prevention education and outreach material.
The will study utilizes an Indigenous talking circle to collect participant experiences instead of a standard focus group. Participants will be assigned to a group based on their availability and will receive a $100 visa gift card after participation.
