ANTHC participates in Alaska Opioid Policy Task Force

June 17, 2016

In recent years, abuse of heroin and other opioid drugs has increased to epidemic levels. Drug abuse affects many parts of our communities from emergency health services and addiction treatment to family support and public safety. In response to the need for coordinated efforts in these areas, the Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, and Alaska Department of Health and Social Services are convening the Alaska Opioid Policy Task Force. ANTHC is participating as a member of the public health system, represented by Dr. Tina Woods, Director of Wellness and Prevention. This task force will work with local communities and other interested individuals to recommend strategies and policies for combating heroin and opioid use to the Governor and Legislature on or before Nov. 30, 2016. The most effective responses to Alaska’s heroin and opioid epidemic will be tailored to meet the needs of rural and urban communities and the diverse cultures of Alaska. The Alaska Opioid Policy Task Force meetings are open to the public. More information on the task force, its work and public participation is available online at
