ANMC Maternal Fetal Medicine earns accreditation in ultrasound quality

December 10, 2018

Alaska Native Medical Center Maternal Fetal Medicine earned recognition for providing excellent services to our expecting Alaska Native mothers. Maternal Fetal Medicine was awarded accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council.

“AIUM accreditation is one of the ways that the ANMC Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic can demonstrate to the people we serve and the general public that we are committed to providing the highest quality of care for our Alaska Native mothers and their babies,” Debbie Phillips, RN, ANMC Clinical Nurse Manager Maternal Fetal Medicine.

The AIUM accreditation is for specialties in adjunct detailed fetal anatomic ultrasound and obstetric – first, second and third trimesters.

ANMC Maternal Fetal Medicine earned the recognition by meeting rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession. All facets of Maternal Fetal Medicine were assessed, including the training and qualifications of physicians and sonographers; ultrasound equipment maintenance; documentation; storage and record-keeping practices; policies and procedures to protect patients and staff; quality assurance methods; and the thoroughness, technical quality and interpretation of the sonograms performed.

Maternal-fetal medicine, also known as high-risk obstetrics or perinatology, provides complete consultation and evaluation of high-risk pregnancies for women and newborns who have complications identified prior to or during pregnancy. ANMC Maternal-Fetal Medicine works collaboratively with the OB/GYN physicians and certified nurse midwives to do everything possible to ensure the health and well-being of new mothers and their babies.

A congratulatory letter from AIUM Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council stated, “The Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council commends Alaska Native Medical Center Maternal Fetal Medicine on its achievement and recognizes the efforts you have taken to provide quality ultrasound.”

ANMC Maternal Fetal Medicine recently moved to the fourth floor of the Gottlieb Building, 4441 Diplomacy Drive, directly east of the ANMC hospital.

“Our new clinic location provides an opportunity for our families to receive information about their pregnancy and healthcare plans in a quiet, therapeutic setting where time and attention are our priority,” Phillips said.
