ANTHC’s Health Facilities Support programs foster secure environments in all aspects of our lives, from worksites to health care systems. Alaska has unique challenges to our infrastructure, so we’ve created unique solutions.
From waste disposal to working conditions, we’ve created programs and protocols, training, and certifications to support the highest standards of health, safety, and infection control in the environments you hold dear.
Services and Programs:
Alaska Safety Working Group
Life in Alaska is different from most other places on earth. This is why our tactics are different, too.
The Alaska Safety Working Group is a core group of individuals who develop unique solutions to Alaska-specific health care issues. They share their expertise in safety, infection control, facilities and environmental health with professionals in these fields.
Membership is open to any interested Tribal health partners. If you would like to learn more about our monthly meetings or are interested in joining, contact the Institutional Environmental Health program.

Hazardous Materials and Waste
ANTHC’s Hazardous Materials and Waste Program can help you determine how to safely manage and transport hazardous materials and waste, and regulated medical waste to protect your staff and your environment.

Our program also provides:
- Monitoring and sampling for hazardous materials.
- Training for rural clinics on shipping regulated medical waste.
- Consultation for pharmacies on Resource Conservation and Recovery Act waste management.
- Viable and non-viable particulate sampling in accordance with USP 797 guidelines.
- Technical assistance, and policy, plan, and procedure reviews for new or renovated pharmacies.
Health Facilities Engineering Program
Keeping Tribal health facilities strong.
Our Health Facilities Engineering Program specializes in the maintenance and improvement of Tribal health facilities across the state. We can work with your team on everything from master planning to construction, and project management to grant assistance. We will help to ensure your facilities are running efficiently and safely and that you are finding the assistance you need.

We coordinate with the Alaska Area Indian Health Service (IHS) and facilitate IHS energy audits, Green Initiative projects, Small Ambulatory Program, JVCP, NEF, Tribal Equipment programs and other IHS funding programs
Master planning, design, construction and project management
Troubleshooting and identifying deficiencies within buildings and infrastructure
General oversight of projects funded through the Maintenance & Improvement Resource Allocation Committee (MIRAC) competitive project pool
Coordination on and advocacy for health care facility related grants
Assistance with grand procurement and management
Energy efficiency evaluations
Code and condition surveys, including federally required surveys
Procurement assistance with consultants, contractors and vendors
Assistance in maintaining facility accreditation
Occupational Health and Safety
Our public facilities and protocols need to be in good working order to safely provide the services our communities need.
ANTHC provides support and assistance to our Tribal health partners with everything from program reviews to exposure prevention in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene and the Handling of Hazardous Drugs.

What We Provide
Occupational Health & Safety works with you to make sure your physical environment meets Life Safety Code and OSHA compliance. We also provide program review and support for:
- Joint Commission Environment of Care standards
- Emergency management
- Life safety and infection control
- Respiratory protection training and education
Industrial Hygiene
Exposure to chemicals and other substances we use in our facilities can create radiological, chemical and biological hazards. We can help you anticipate, evaluate, control and prevent these potential hazards.
When appropriate, the IEH program can monitor for the following substances and other chemicals used in a facility:
-Glutaraldehyde
– Formaldehyde
– Mercury
– Nitrous Oxide
– Carbon Monoxide
– Carbon Dioxide
– Waste Anesthetic Gasses
– Solvents (toluene)
– Ventilation Studies (indoor air quality investigations)
– Noise
– Ergonomic Surveys
– Ortho-Phthalaldehyde (OPA)
– Welding fumes
We can also provide and ship industrial hygiene equipment and instruments to your facilities upon request.
Handling of Hazardous Drugs
We provide consultation on how to safely dispose of and reduce potential occupational exposures to hazardous drugs. We can also conduct wipe sampling to assess environmental contamination potential in the facility.
Additionally, we can verify proper operation of Compounding Aseptic Containment Isolators used for compounding of hazardous drugs in the pharmacy and review plans for pharmacy compounding areas during new construction or renovations.

Radiological Health
Meet regulatory requirements in one visit.
Whether your Tribal health organization offers medical or dental X-rays, our consultative services and assistance will ensure your facility is offering proper radiation safety in accordance with the regulations of the State of Alaska.
Our radiation protection surveys conducted during our visits include compliance monitoring, quality assurance and most importantly, evaluation of patient radiation dose exposures (an expectation of most accrediting agencies).

Additional Services
Additional services provided by the program include:
- Establishment and management of dosimetry programs and investigation of excessive exposures.
- Shielding design review to help determine the amount of shielding needed when remodeling or installing new X-ray suites.
