Construction is progressing rapidly on the Emergency Services Expansion, with the next section of the Emergency Services Department scheduled to open on July 29. The section opening is known as Zone Charlie and consists of an additional 11 emergency exam rooms.
Construction update
Construction crews began installing the base plates for the structural steel columns on levels 2 and 3 of the existing hospital. They will be bolting the column base plates to the existing roof deck. The impact should be minimal, with some noise and vibrations, as they bolt the columns to the roof deck.
In May, the ANTHC Board of Directors approved Phase 2 of the Emergency Services Expansion. This means we will move forward with the construction of floors 4-6, which will add 60 new inpatient beds.
The expansion is a significant step in establishing a modern system of care for Alaska Native and American Indian people. Phase 1 (floors 1-3) addresses the capacity issue of care being provided in Emergency Room hallways, while Phase 2 (floors 4-6) alleviates some of the throughput and overall capacity constraints within the hospital.
