Short-term Skilled Nursing Facility
A place to heal.
On any given day, the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) is caring for patients who are well enough to leave the hospital, but not quite ready to go home.
The ANTHC Board of Directors approved the construction of a Short-term Skilled Nursing Facility to address this gap in the continuum of care. In early summer 2024, ANTHC broke ground on the $69 million project, which will soon alleviate capacity pressure at the hospital. The facility will provide patient care at the appropriate level and improve our ability to support acute patient care needs at the hospital.
The facility will also house an occupational rehabilitation area, public and private dining areas, a chapel, game and activity rooms, and an outdoor courtyard.
Construction Updates
Construction of the 80-bed, 92,000-square-foot, short-term skilled nursing facility is expected to be completed in January 2027.
Project Achievements & Upcoming Milestones:
There are fewer coats out there and we’ve even spotted someone in a short-sleeved shirt! Here’s what our team shared about the progress of their work so far this month:
- The ICF wall was poured in phase 6
- Column bases are secured in preparation for the concrete pour next week
- The tent was removed from phase 5 and roof installation is underway
- Phase 4 sheet rocking is complete
- Trees have been cleared and ground thaw is down for the Chugach work
- Sprinkler work is underway for phases 3-5
Note: “Phase” refers to the area or section being worked on. Each phase includes the first floor, second floor, and roof. See Phase map below.
Upcoming Milestones:
- Re-route gas lines for permanent service with Enstar
- Chugach to set up permanent power to the facility
- Finish the last of the remaining curtainwall windows
Construction Impacts: This is a new build construction project on the corner of Ambassador Drive and Elmore Road. There should not be direct impacts to patients, although visitors to campus will most likely notice new construction activity. Noise levels will increase in the immediate vicinity due to the operation of heavy equipment.

Emergency Services Expansion
Improving the way we serve you and yours.
Our emergency services are expanding. To better serve you and your family, ANTHC is making great strides to bolster and build our emergency, clinical, behavioral health and surgery spaces. Nearly 60 new spaces for care, treatment, observation and recovery are being added and renovations are underway to elevate the care we provide, throughout your entire medical journey.
About the Expansion
Phase 1
Construction for Phase 1 of the Emergency Services Expansion (ESE) project, which includes floors 1-3 and renovations to the existing Emergency Services Department is underway. Improvements that will come with the expansion of floors 1-3, include:
- Expanded, 2-bay ambulance entrance
- Core and shell design to build floors 4-6
Phase 2
ANTHC is also moving forward with designing floors 4-6 as we seek additional funding to support construction of Phase 2, which includes:
- 60 new inpatient, private rooms
- Family waiting area
- Conference rooms
While we have a lot of work ahead, we are making significant strides to improve the services we provide.
Construction Updates
Construction update
Basement and Level 1 drywall, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installations are in progress. Air Handler Units are being prepped for connection at level 3.
Hanger installation for ceiling infrastructure is ongoing on Levels 1 and 3. Brick demolition is ongoing at the east side of level 3 on the existing hospital.
Level 1 interior wall framing has started, and fireproofing of structural steel on Levels 2 and 3 is complete.
Upcoming construction includes: Work on Level 6 concrete placement and Level 1 exterior framing is expected to commence later this month; Fuel storage infrastructure on the west side of the hospital and exterior curtain wall work will commence in May; and work on the north end of the parking lot will commence in June.
Potential Operational Impacts
Air intake plenums installed to improve air flow may cause some noise.
Brick demolition will cause noise and vibration. However, the majority of the demolition is on the exterior of mechanical spaces and away from occupied spaces.
Stairwell 6 closure is ongoing and is scheduled to run through the Spring of 2027.
Reminder: The former Emergency Room entrance is closed for construction.
As construction continues elsewhere in the hospital, patients should present to the Temporary ESD, located on the southeast side of the hospital. Access to the Temporary ESD is from the Diplomacy Drive entrance.

Parking Updates
Most of the ANMC Hospital east parking lot is fenced off for construction activities. Day parking is no longer available in the ANMC hospital east lot, except for limited ADA accessible parking. The remainder of available parking in this area is reserved for ESD patients.
Additional parking locations include: The ANMC Patient Housing Parking Garage (north of the hospital), Denali Parking Garage (east of the hospital), and Flattop Mountain Parking Garage (south of the hospital). There is a marked pedestrian path from the Denali Parking Garage for all foot traffic between the garage and the ANMC hospital.
