Patient-provider communications training now available in HealthStream

December 2, 2016

Effectively sharing health information is a key component of positive health outcomes and patient safety. Health literacy is one of the seven focus areas of the Wellness Strategies for Health initiative, a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to promote health and wellness for Alaska Native and American Indian people. Through the grant, Alaska Native Epidemiology Center staff collaborated with ANTHC Human Resources to create the “Always Use Teach-back!” interactive learning module to the ANTHC HealthStream Learning Center. The health literacy of an organization has been identified by the American Medical Association, the Joint Commission, and the Institute of Medicine as an important means of ensuring patient safety and health outcomes. Teach-back is an evidence-based strategy health care providers can use to gauge patient understanding and clarity of communications during clinical encounters. This program will allow us to do a better job with health education, improving the patient care experience. Regional Tribal health partners that have access to HealthStream can also access this new module. Contact Cynthia Puig at (907) 729-3493 for more information about how to access HealthStream.
