Division of Community Health Services
The Division of Community Health Services (DCHS) is dedicated to the achievement of the
ANTHC vision (Alaska Natives are the healthiest people in the world). We believe that the
only way reach that vision is by preventing disease, premature death, and injury - keeping
people out of our hospital-based system in the first place. Our primary partners are the
Tribal Health Organizations in the Alaska Tribal Health System (ATHS). We strive to serve
their needs through health provider training, program & technical consultation, health
surveillance and data gathering/dissemination, and coordinating meaningful health research.
February is Heart Month!
Historically Alaska Native people have enjoyed lower rates of heart disease compared to their non-Native counterparts. However, because of changing lifestyles our rates of heart disease increased over the years. When we ate more traditional/subsistence foods, when we didn't smoke, when we were more physically fit - our risk of developing heart disease was lower. Watch this brief video from Dr. Matt Schnellbaecher about heart disease risk factors. To learn more about heart health and what you can do to lower your risk please visit: www.americanheart.org.
Does your 2010 New Year's resolution include getting in shape? We have something that might help. Check out this Alaska Native fitness video produced by the Health Promotion/Disease Program in collaboration with the Southcentral Foundation. For ordering information send an email to LifeTips@anthc.org with "fitness" in the subject line.
The DCHS Report to the Community (FY09) has been distributed to Tribal Leadership, and is now available here.
