Overview of Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium

ANTHC is part of the Alaska Tribal Health System, a network of tribes linked by common goals and objectives. ANTHC
provides specialty medical care, community health services, construction of clean-water and sanitation facilities, information technology, training and educational support, and a host of other health services. ANTHC is the largest and most comprehensive tribal health organization in the country.

ANTHC was formed in December 1997 to manage statewide health services for Alaska Natives. All Alaska Natives, through their tribal governments and through their regional nonprofit organizations, own the Consortium.
ANTHC employs approximately 1,800 people and has an operating budget of more than $300 million. We are based on the Alaska Native Health Campus on Tudor Road in Anchorage.

ANTHC practices self-governance

ANTHC is one of 22 co-signers of the Alaska Tribal Health Compact, a self-governance agreement with the Indian Health Service. Self-governance is fundamentally designed to provide tribal governments with more control and decision-making authority over the federal financial resources provided for the benefit of American Indian and Alaska Native people. More importantly, self-governance fosters the shaping of a new partnership between tribes and the United States in their government-to-government relationships. Self-governance provides, administratively, the opportunity for tribal governments to exercise their sovereignty with minimal federal intrusion and involvement.

The Indian Health Service and tribal programs provide health services to approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to 556 federally recognized tribes in 35 states. As of 2006, there are 61 self-governance tribal compacts and 81 funding agreements representing 285 tribes, providing health services to more than 51.1% of the American Indian and Alaska Native tribes.
